The Caballona Kitchen

In May 2010, we visited the Lumbrera de Caballona School in the Dominican Republic, where more than 50 kids go the entire day without a single meal. Most of the children at the school don't eat dinner the night before. We asked the woman that runs the school how we could help. She said, “These kids can’t study because they’re so hungry. Headaches, stomach pains and dizziness are a typical part of their day. If we can feed them, they’ll study better. If they study better, they’ll stay in school.”

Then she said, “But, even more than the food, we need a kitchen. Right now, if we had the food we couldn’t do anything with it, because there’s no place to cook. Oh, and we would love a boys bathroom and a girls bathroom. Right now over fifty children share one toilet that hides behind a curtain.”

That’s all we needed to hear. The Skip1 Team and all of our wonderful skippers (like you!) went to work. As of July 2011, the kitchen and two bathrooms are now almost complete. Our team visited the school on February 24th, 2011 and saw it with their own eyes (see photos below). The AFTER picture you see below is from June 2011.

BEFORE AFTER

Now let’s get them some food. Chicken, rice, vegetables, beans and a glass of clean water can help prevent headaches and stomach pains and keep the children in Caballona healthy. $1.25 provides a meal for one child for one day. So for about $38, you can keep a child fed for 1 month!

Your contribution will make a huge impact.Donate today and remember, 100% of all public donations are passed straight through to the care and feeding of children in need.
